First Annual Report

Year Ending 2008

From the Founder . . .

A dog waits outside while the homeless man enters the soup kitchen for his daily meal.  His eyes light up and water when he is given a zip lock bag of dry dog food.   For the man it is one less thing he will not have to worry about today.

A recipient of a grant receives a number of tail wags from pets receiving care, and a few hugs from owners who had tears in their eyes after receiving medical assistance for their pets.

A homeless man emailing us from a public library asking for help finding pet food, the food pantry that he goes to does not have pet food to give.

A homeless woman who is on social security needs help finding a veterinarian who will treat her pit bull that she rescued from a dog fighting ring.  We guide her to one of the free clinics.

And the eight volunteers who work with a member in Texas to pick up pet food and supplies from a number of collection sites and then deliver it to a homeless shelter in Dallas.  Hundreds of pets of the homeless are fed on a weekly basis.

These are a few examples of the small but satisfying victories in our first year.  A year marked by extraordinary progress in our fight to combat hunger for the thousands of pets living on the streets  with their guardians.  And a year in which we were able to help veterinarians and their staff administer vaccines, flea treatments, ear cleanings, heart worm treatments and medical care by giving them grants to start free clinics to the homeless in nine communities.

We have grown with the help of our many donors and foundations that could see the need for an innovative organization that would recruit a group of people that care enough to give back to their community.  Without our help many homeless and poor would have to turn their pets over to overcrowded animal shelters because they cannot feed or provide medical care and vaccines for their pets.  Without our help many of these folks would lose the only living thing that brings them comfort and unconditional love.  Without our help the elderly and disabled that rely on Meals on Wheels would not be given pet food along with their own meal.

A favorite quote of mine:  “Never be afraid to do what’s right especially if the well being of a person or animal is at stake.  Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.” – Martin L. King, Jr.

As we watch the rising numbers of people becoming homeless and poverty mounting with the worst economy since the depression, the need for continued support is growing too.   We are grateful for the support we have already received and for your deep generosity.  In return, you have my promise to add more and more collection sites and more distributing organizations to our family, so that we may help those pets who are struggling to survive.

Our volunteer members collect pet food and deliver it to food banks and/or soup kitchens which have agreed to distribute the food to the homeless and impoverished.  Members and organizations are listed at www.petsofhomeless.org under “Collection Sites and Distributing Organizations”.  The information is updated daily.

At our main office we coordinate and support our members.  We accept cash donations; distribute grant applications to veterinarians and other nonprofit organizations that meet our objectives; review and award grants.

Mission Statement:

Through Feeding Pets of the Homeless, we will do our part to help reduce hunger in pets that belong to the homeless and the less fortunate and provide medical care for those pets in communities across the country.

We believe in the healing power of companion pets and of the human/animal bond which is very important to life.

 Our actions include the following:

·        Promoting to veterinarians and pet related businesses the importance of joining the program

·        Speaking out on the issue of pets of homeless and the disadvantaged

·        Campaigning to food distributing organizations the importance of distributing pet food to the less fortunate

·        Providing grants to licensed veterinarians and other nonprofit organizations that meet our objectives to administer medical care to pets of the homeless.

Tax reporting period from January 1, 2008 to July 25, 2008 was filed under the LLC.  Upon approval of the nonprofit 501(c)(3) status, the LLC gifted all net assets to the nonprofit organization.
